Guide 01
Mecklenburg County's greenway system is one of Charlotte's best assets — and one of the most contested spaces for eBike access.
No exceptions. Slow when approaching. Announce passes. The single most important rule on Charlotte greenways.
eBikes up to 20mph generally permitted on paved greenway sections throughout Mecklenburg County.
28mph Class 3 bikes restricted on some sections. Always check posted signs at trailheads.
One complaint, one viral clip — and the conversation shifts from "eBikes welcome" to "eBike ban." Every rider is responsible.
Key Greenways
Uptown to Midtown. High pedestrian traffic — ride with extreme caution near crowds.
South Charlotte corridor extending into Matthews. Generally eBike-friendly on paved sections.
Southeast Charlotte and Matthews connections. Check trailhead postings for section restrictions.
University area. Heavy pedestrian and dog traffic — slow speed essential near trailheads.

Not all helmets are appropriate for all builds. Here's what the ratings mean and which applies to the speeds you're actually riding.
CPSC
Legal minimum in NC. Not sufficient for eBike speeds above 20mph.
MIPS
Adds rotational impact protection. Strongly recommended for all eBike riders.
NTA 8776
For Class 3 and high-speed eBikes. Tested at speeds up to 28mph. The right standard for most Charlotte eBike riders.
ASTM F1952
For high-performance builds reaching 30–45mph (Surron, Talaria). Full-face or certified DH helmet required.
No AirPods. No Earbuds. No Exceptions.
Both ears in Charlotte traffic. eBike riders at 20–40mph need full situational awareness. Module 04 covers gear requirements in full.

Depends on the build and modifications. Stock models may be classified as motor vehicles under NC law. Module 01 of the course covers this in full.
Not in Uptown — ordinance §14-286 prohibits it. At eBike speeds near pedestrians it's dangerous regardless of what's technically permitted elsewhere.
Matthews follows Mecklenburg County and NC state law. Town ordinances restrict sidewalk riding downtown. Greenway connections generally permit eBikes with pedestrian priority. See the full Matthews NC guide.
Required by law for under-16. Volt Certified requires helmets for everyone — the legal minimum is not the safety standard on high-speed builds.
